When a rocket carrying a new crew vehicle lifts off at Cape Canaveral next year, it will be the first big step in a decades-long odyssey to see humans travel farther into space than ever before.
That ambitious program, called Orion, has goals that sound as if they were lifted from the pages of a sci-fi novel: the capture of near-Earth asteroids, bringing them into lunar orbit, a return to the moon, and putting astronauts on Mars.
Baby steps in the odyssey are already being taken in labs and testing facilities across the nation. One is at Aerojet in Rancho Cordova, Calif. There, inside solemn buildings surrounded by fields of dry grass, rockets destined for the dark reaches of space are being designed and tested.
Aerojet is supplying the large and small rockets that will allow the Orion multipurpose crew vehicle, designed to house four astronauts, to orient itself during space flight and during the re-entry to Earth's atmosphere, said Sam Wiley, head of human space at Aerojet.
The company is also supplying a launch-abort system, which would pull the crew module to safety in a life-threatening event during launch.
Next year's unmanned test flight will determine whether NASA is on target to safeguard the lives of astronauts. The heat shield has to be strong enough to sustain the furnace-like heat that will surround the module as it re-enters Earth's atmosphere after orbit. For Orion, that return will happen at 20,000 mph; the space shuttle entered at 12,500 mph.
A successful test flight would bode well for NASA's plans for a first unmanned lunar orbital flight in 2017. That flight would take four astronauts into high orbit -- 3,600 miles into space -- the farthest an astronaut has gone since Apollo 17 in 1972. A full-crew mission to recover an asteroid is slated for 2021.
After that, the milestones get more exotic, the risks more pronounced, and the plans and funding sketchier. Orion will be the taxi-like conveyer of astronauts from Earth to space. It is less clear what craft will take astronauts from the crew module to a landing on Mars or the moon.
This year's presidential budget request for NASA seeks 2.7 billion for space exploration.
Some in Congress, such as Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, R-Calif., vice chairman of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, remain skeptical about funding the massive Orion program and its launch system.
In a recent editorial in the Orlando Sentinel, Rohrabacher stated: "I've never seen NASA accomplish a large mission on budget and on schedule. NASA should work on these projects, but it needs better cost estimates, and better program management....
'NASA is incapable and unwilling to include technologies that have not yet been proved in space. NASA has lost its edge," Rohrabacher wrote.
Regardless of the use of established technology, Orion is expected to travel to Mars and it moons, said Larry Price, Orion deputy program manager for Lockheed Martin, NASA's prime contractor for the Orion project.
'The biggest challenge is combining all of the technology and putting it into the largest spacecraft that has ever been built, other than the shuttle, and be able to sustain life for months and go great distances into the solar system," Price said.
'The point is to follow up on all of the groundwork that the Mars rovers have been doing, with human exploration capability."
Having humans rather than rovers on the Red Planet means they could make immediate decisions and wouldn't always have to wait for radio communication with Earth -- a 20-minute delay each way with Mars.
However, the introduction of humans brings physiological challenges.
The most vexing is the high radiation exposure astronauts would encounter on a months-long trip to and from Mars, as well as time spent on the planet, said NASA astronaut Stan Love. A former shuttle astronaut, Love is examining the feasibility of sending the Orion crew vehicle to near-Earth objects for NASA.
'We're still trying to understand what the exact radiation environment is out there - and we're still trying to understand the effect of that radiation on people," Love said. "It's a kind of a tricky subject - if you were studying this with rats you would irradiate a bunch of them, half would die and you would know what the dose is and you can adjust for that.... We can't really do that with people."

It resembles a white sheet of paper, standard letter size. On three occasions it has flown directly overhead, over the south side of our parking lot at work, tracking from west to east. On two of those occasions it has arced up into the sky shortly after passing over, and on a third occasion it just continued on a straight path to the east. With the first sighting, it paused in its trajectory and hovered directly overhead for a moment, as if it was observing me while I was looking up at it. On one other occasion, it appeared to be engaged in the sheer joy of being able to fly. It galloped upwards in spurts, rolled over into a dive, and then leveled off while flying in a westward direction. I didn't have time to continue watching its escapades on this occasion, as it was the end of the day at work and I had to go catch my bus.

A holiday-maker from Preston, Lancs., told me about something his two young daughters had seen... a big, feathered bird-man hovering over the church tower at Mawnan (a village near the mouth of the Helford River). The girls (June 12, and Vicky, daughters of Mr Don Melling), were so scared that the family cut their holiday short and went back three days early. This really is a fantastic thing, and I am sure the man wasn't just making it up because he'd been told I was on a monster hunt. I couldn't get the kids to talk about it (in fact, their father wouldn't even let me try), but he gave me a sketch of the thing drawn by June. "There have been no reports, so far as I know, of anybody else seeing the Bird-Man... even if it turned out to be just a fancy dress hang-glider, you'd think someone else would have spotted him... but Mawnan is not a place for hang-gliding! I really don't know what to think... it's as if a whole load of weirdness has been let loose in the Falmouth area since last autumn!" Although, if you read any of the books on general mystery animals such as "Alien Animals" by Janet and Colin Bord, or indeed any of the contemporary copies of "Fortean Times" the claim that Cornwall had been particularly weird at the time is often made, it is not until you visit the Cornish Studies Library in the back streets of Redruth, sit yourself down at one of their microfiche machines, and physically examine twelve months or more's issues of "The Falmouth Packet", "The West Briton" and "The Western Morning News" that you can see quite how strange the time actually was. For a period between the late autumn of 1975 and the early spring of 1977 it seems that Southern Cornwall was seized by a period of collective madness. Much of this is chronicled in some depth in my book "The Owlman and Others" but even there I think that I failed to give a true picture of quite how strange the area had become. There were dramatic extremes in the weather - droughts and floods - heatwaves and frozen wastes. The local animal life went (figuratively and literally) crazy; one unfortunate woman was imprisoned in her house by hordes of attacking birds which literally beat themselves to death against the walls of her house, which was dripping red with their blood. Another woman was similarly imprisoned by a mob of feral cats, dog attacks trebled, swimmers were attacked by dolphins (who also saved other swimmers from drowning), and there were reports that cattle belonging to local farmers had developed the power of teleportation. Most interesting to the fortean were the burgeoning numbers of UFO sightings and the reports of three entirely different sets of mystery animal in the region; Morgawr (the Cornish Sea Serpent), the Cornish mystery big cats and the Owlman of Mawnan.Here's the rest of Jon's weird story! Much attention is being given to a new book, Witness to Roswell: Unmasking the 60-Year Cover-Up by Thomas J. Carey, and Donald R. Schmitt. The book is offered at a very low price, and if you have an interest in it, now is the time to buy. I would like to point out some of the key points of new facts given in the book.
The most compelling piece of information is from one Walter Haut, who was the Roswell base public information officer. He wrote, under the direction of Colonel Blanchard, the now famous press release that was carried in papers all over the world proclaiming that the Air Force was in possession of a flying saucer. Of course, this was soon retracted.
Haut, now deceased, filled out a notarized affidavit in 2002, to only be opened after his death. This document makes some incredible claims. First of all, reiterating previous oral claims, he states that he actually saw the debris of the crashed flying saucer, and several alien bodies with big heads. This occurred at the now infamous Hangar 84 on July 8.
He also affirms what many Roswell researchers have stated-a second crash site besides the one at the Foster Ranch. The second site allegedly held the main saucer and alien bodies. The northern most site had been found by civilians, and this news was being spread throughout the small town of Roswell.
On July 9, Haut was in attendance at a staff meeting, where members were brought up to speed on the events of the day. Jesse Marcel Sr. and Sheridan Cavitt briefed members on the wreckage at the Foster Ranch, while Blanchard, who had accompanied Haut to the hangar, briefed members on the northern crash site and alien bodies. Haut also states that General Ramey and Colonel Dubose were in attendance. It was at this meeting that battle plans were drawn to debunk the saucer story to the general public.
During this meeting, members were shown and able to handle material picked up from the crash sites. Haut had brought back debris of his own on at least one occasion. Haut also stated that clean-up crews were sent to the crash sites for months to be certain nothing was left behind.
Besides the Haut testimony, several other witnesses of importance are discussed in the book. A Sgt. Frederick Benthal, who was an Army photographer from Washington, D. C. is one of them. He was taken to the site of the dead alien bodies, and photographed them, housed in a tent. The tent was guarded by one PFC Ed Sain, whose son was told that his father was taken to the body site, and ordered to shoot anyone who tried to enter the tent. He also mentions another military policeman, Cpl. Raymond Van Why, who was with Benthal at the site.
Benthal's wife states that he talked about the Roswell event in 1954, after he left the military. He stated that he had been a guard at a crash site, and had actually seen an alien space craft.
Another witness of importance was Sgt. Homer Rowlette, who was a member of the 603rd Air Engineering Squadron. His son and daughter stated that he told them on his deathbed about his involvement in the clean-up detail. He also had handled the famous "Roswell foil." He also claimed to have seen three little bodies with big heads at the scene. He stated that one of the aliens was still alive.

Northern New Mexico, Upon my trip from Angel Fire New Mexico where I attended Janet Sailor' s 2010 Paranormal Symposium and Film Festival to appear on the Jerry Pippin Show with panelists Dennis Balthaser and Norio Hayakawa, I noticed something strange occurring in the sky as I drove towards the Petrified Natural Forrest.
A line-shaped cloud was forming out of nothing, and strangely casting a slicing effect, not a shadow on one adjoining cloud... then it began to cast a shadow on another. I have never seen anything of the sort in my entire career scanning the skies as a UFO researcher. Thankfully I have learned over the years to scan the skies not only during the night but in the day as well.
This strange line-cloud creating itself out of nothing was something that I was not familiar with, but I had my camera with me. I noticed that the road began to curve towards the right and that I might lose the event from camera view. Just as I began to slow my car down to capture the image, boom! A loud crack in the sky triggered a flash just where the line-cloud was headed, and a bright (very bright) lighted portion of the sky emerged. I wanted to stop my car but the traffic was at 75 mph and I just had to take pictures while remaining on the road.
As slowed down, trying not to kill myself, I began to snap away. The brightness subsided but not before displaying a strange Rainbow (Aurora) like cloud, the same as the many seen before seismic events around the globe; sometimes attributed to HAARP. I continued to take pictures, one from a distance, then again close up. What got me was that the surrounding clouds did not blow away from the flash. And as I drove towards it, the clouds in the background began to close in to the area of the sky where the flash had occurred. Then, before I knew it, the spectacle was gone. The line cloud began to fully dissipate and the colorful Aurora-like pattern also begun to dissapear.
I still do not know what I saw, but the event was amazing. Could this have been a military exercise, or just a natural event? I just do not know. The loud crack sounded like a man made explosion, but the ensuing celestial events were almost as if created by God himself. In closing, I would like to say that I am planning on conducting an investigative look into this phenomena.

BUT AFTER A NEAR MISS TWO WEEKS AGO BETWEEN HIS HELICOPTER AND A "BIG, GRAY, METALLIC-LOOKING" OBJECT IN THE SKY OVER MANSFIELD, HE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT TO THINK.
"I HAD TO FILE AN OFFICIAL REPORT IN DETAIL TO THE ARMY ON THIS THING," HE SAID.
"Coyne is a member of the 316th Medical Detachment stationed at Cleveland Hopkins Airport. He was returning from Columbus at 11:10 p.m., Oct. 18, when the UFO showed up near where the Air National Guard has a squadron of jet fighters based.
He said a check turned up that none of the unit's F-100 Super Saber Jets were in the air when the UFO appeared. Coyne said when he first encountered the UFO, his helicopter was cruising at 2,500 feet. He had the controls set for a 20-degree dive, but the craft climbed to 3,500 feet with no power.
"I HAD MADE NO ATTEMPT TO PULL UP," HE SAID. "THERE WAS NO NOISE OR TURBULENCE, EITHER."
Coyne said a red light appeared on the eastern horizon, and was first spotted by his crew chief, Sgt. Robert Yanacsek.
"The light was traveling in excess of 600 knots," Coyne said. "It came from the horizon to our aircraft in about 10 seconds. We were on a collision course."
The pilot said he put his helicopter into a dive.
"At 1,700 feet I braced myself for the impact with the other craft," he said. "It was coming from our right side. I was scared. There had been so little time to respond. The thing was terrifically fast."
There was no crash.
"We looked up and saw it stopped right over us," Coyne said. "It had a big, gray metallic-looking hull about 60 feet long. It was shaped like an airfoil or a streamlined fat cigar. There was a red light on the front. The leading edge glowed red a short distance back from the nose. There was a center dome. A green light at the rear reflected on the hull."
Coyne said the green light swiveled like a spotlight and beamed through the canopy of his craft, bathing the cabin in green light. He said as he and members of the crew stared at the craft his helicopter began to climb without his guidance.
"I had made no attempt to pull up," he said. "All controls were set for a 20-degree dive. Yet we had climbed from 1,700 to 3,500 feet with no power in a couple of seconds with no g-forces or other noticeable strains."
Coyne said the UFO finally moved off to the west and was gone.
MANSFIELD -- More than 40 years ago strange things were happening in the skies over north central Ohio. A close encounter in Mansfield, that has since become known as "The Coyne Incident," is still raising eyebrows among believers and UFO investigators. That evening, in a soybean field on the west side of Galion, Rene Boucher and her brother Brad encountered a bright light in the sky that has lured her from Florida for another sojourn into that field.
It was about 11 p.m. on Oct. 18, 1973, when an Army Reserve helicopter came perilously close to colliding with an unidentified flying object. Arrigo "Rick" Jezzi, 56, who now lives in Cincinnati, was flying the Huey helicopter that night. Three decades later, he is still not sure what happened. Jezzi was one of four members of an Army Reserve unit based at Hopkins Airport in Cleveland on board. The crew was en route to Cleveland from Columbus.
"Capt. Larry Coyne was the pilot," Jezzi said. "I was in the left seat, actually flying the Huey at the time. We were near Mansfield flying at 2,500 to 3,000 feet."
John Healey and Robert Yanacsek were in the back of the Huey, near a cargo door with a Plexiglas window.
"One of the guys in the back reported a red light. He said it looked like an aircraft light on the right horizon," Jezzi said. "I couldn't see it."
Jezzi was flying from the left seat. On the other side of the Huey there was a 12-foot section of fuselage between the side window and the cargo doors. He figures the red light was in his blind spot.
"Then I heard 'I think its coming toward us'," Jezzi said. "The next thing I knew Larry took control of the throttle. We went into a maneuver, a controlled free fall. We dropped about 2,000 feet."
Jezzi said if Coyne had not made the drastic maneuver there would have been a collision.
"It took just a couple of seconds," Jezzi said. "I remember looking up through the ceiling and I saw a white light moving over top of us. I followed it to the left horizon where it disappeared."
Jezzi isn't sure what he saw. It was like no aircraft he'd ever seen. He guessed it was traveling at least 500 knots, twice the speed of his Huey.
"Red navigational lights aren't located in the front of an aircraft," he said. "That's what was moving toward us. I don't know what it was."
The incident was documented by witnesses on the ground. In UFO lore the "Coyne Incident" is regarded as one of the most reliable UFO sightings of all time.
"It caused a lot of hullabaloo," Jezzi said. "The first thing I thought was those Commie bastards. What are they up to."
The next morning two of the other crew members, while being questioned about the incident, sketched drawings of the cigar-shaped craft they observed.
"They both came up with similar drawings," Jezzi said.
The magnetic compass in the Huey never worked right after the incident and had to be replaced. Rene Bouchard doesn't know what she saw in Galion about 60 minutes earlier that same evening.
"I was in high school. My brother was in junior high," she said. "There had been a lot of sightings in the days and weeks before that. Even the governor reported seeing something. We thought we'd give it a try."
She and her brother walked out in the field behind their home and started watching the sky.
"We saw a bunch of stuff that looked like it was maybe 30,000 feet in the air," she said. "But it wasn't anything spectacular. Then I think we both put our heads down for some reason. That's when we saw this brilliant white light. It was as bright as the sun. I don't know what it was but it scared us. We ran for two blocks until we got home."
Rene has since moved to Florida. Her brother is in California. She's back in Galion today and plans to go out in that same bean field to spend part of her evening.
"We really saw something that night," she said. "I don't know what it was. But I'll be back there (tonight). I called my brother and asked him to fly here so he could go with me. He said no. I'm not expecting to see anything. But I'm going to be there."

Denver is not known for UFO activity, it seems that extraterrestrial beings prefer to visit warmer cities like Roswell. It is patently absurd for Peckman to try to position Denver as a hub of UFO activity.
It would make more sense for Roswell, New Mexico or a city near Area 51 in Nevada to establish an Extra Terrestrial Affairs Committee.
Jeff Peckman did a disservice to his cause with his ludicrous proposal. The good citizens of Denver soundly defeated Peckman's ballot initiative, he needs to move to Roswell where his ballot initiative might be successful.

Now it has been reported in China that the famous Purple Mountain Observatory has confirmed that they observed a UFO on the day of the eclipse and have forty minutes worth of footage which they will spend the next year studying.
Purple Mountain Observatory Director and Chinese Academy of Sciences Fellow, JI Hai-sheng said at present it is impossible to speculate what the unidentified object is.
