"We're saying that "if" aliens build self-replicating probes, they could explore the entire Milky Way in about ten million years," study co-author Dr. Duncan Forgan, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Edinburgh's Institute for Astronomy, told The Huffington Post in an email.
Ten million years is a relatively short timespan, given that scientists estimate the universe is around 13.8 billion years old.
How could such probes make copies of themselves? Dr. Duncan said that we humans seem to be closing in on the necessary technology ourselves, and "with current 3D printing tech, it might only be a century or two before humans figure it out!"
Travel by slingshot effect -- also called gravity assist -- isn't as wacky as it sounds either. When a probe passes near a planet, it can get a boost in speed from the planet's gravity. NASA has exploited the phenomenon on many occasions--perhaps most notably with the Voyager I and II space probes. Launched in 1977, the probes used gravity assist to reach the edge of our solar system.
Alien probes using the same slingshot maneuvers wouldn't have to depend on powerful engines or massive amounts of fuel. And they could explore the galaxy 100 times faster than probes navigated by powered flight, Dr. Duncan said.
The paper, entitled "Slingshot Dynamics for Self-Replicating Probes and the Effect on Exploration Timescales," was published in the "International Journal of Astrobiology".

JUNE 08, 2013 - SPACE - Severe space weather could be as devastating to the planet as serious tornadoes and other natural disasters, NASA chief Charles Bolden said in a public address Tuesday (June 4).

A huge X1.2-class solar flare erupted from the sun late Tuesday (May 14, 2013), the fourth major flare in two days from a busy sunspot on the surface of the sun. NASA's Solar Dynamic Observatory captured this view of the event.
Bolden spoke before scientists and industry members at the Space Weather Enterprise Forum, which was held at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Auditorium and Science Center in Silver Spring, Md. The daylong conference aimed to bring together researchers and policymakers to identify how the sun's activity impacts Earth, and the potentially harmful effects of space weather.
"This conference shines a spotlight on another naturally occurring phenomenon that can be just as punishing as a tornado - space weather," Bolden said in his written remarks for the event, after mentioning his grief at the lives lost during the deadly outbreak of tornadoes in the Midwest in recent weeks.
Strong solar storms can damage satellites in space and, if aimed at Earth, can interfere with communications infrastructure and power grids on the ground. Conference attendees discussed potential vulnerabilities in existing infrastructure, and how they can be made more robust. Space weather researchers also highlighted ongoing mitigation efforts, including improvements in technology and modeling that may help predict future storms.
Developing a clearer picture of when these storms may strike, and their potential impacts, is crucial, Bolden said. "Given the growing importance of space to our nation's economic well being and security, it is of increasing importance that NASA and its partner agencies continue to advance our nation's capability to understand and predict space weather events," he explained.
The radiation released by severe sun storms can also be risky for astronauts living aboard the International Space Station. Understanding the way humans in space are affected by space weather will help NASA plan future manned missions to the moon, Mars or beyond, Bolden said.
Last week, a new study found that astronauts on a mission to Mars could be exposed to dangerous levels of radiation from both solar particles and cosmic rays from outside the solar system, even with shielding on the spacecraft. The research, which was published in the journal Science, determined that on a trip to Mars, spaceflyers would be subject to radiation doses between 100 and 1,000 times higher than on Earth.
"The findings will aid design of future human missions by reducing uncertainty about how much shielding from radiation astronauts need," Bolden said. "For these and other reasons this forum and our efforts to study, monitor, and mitigate radiation exposure are so very important."
The NASA administrator also spoke about the need for international cooperation in studying the effects of space weather. "Space weather is a problem that crosses all borders and demands input from our international counterparts," Bolden said.
Next week, Bolden is scheduled to speak at the 56th session of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space in Vienna, Austria. This year, for the first time, the UN committee has added space weather as a topic for discussion, recognizing it to be as serious a threat as space junk and near-Earth asteroids, Bolden said.
"With the United Nations now on our team, we are assured of even greater global coordination in the effort to increase our understanding of space weather and its impact on Earth and throughout the solar system," he added. "We have shown how, working as a team, we can save lives when hurricanes and tornadoes strike here on Earth. A power outage could leave Western nations without electricity for months in the event of a strong geomagnetic storm, a new report claims, adding that it is "almost inevitable in the future" while the sun is approaching the peak of its solar cycle.
It is a known fact that solar activity is interconnected with the our planet's geomagnetic fields that are known to affect life on Earth, including widespread electrical disruptions. Currently the Sun's activity is ramping up toward what is known as solar maximum as the peak of the 11-year solar cycle is expected in 2015.
According to the report, produced by Lloyd's in cooperation with Atmospheric and Environmental research (AER), super solar storms normally occur approximately every 150 years, the last being the Carrington Event in 1859 - a geomagnetic storm that caused disruptions in telegraph lines all over the world and the brightest auroras. However that was long before people were so dependent on electricity.
The report outlines a doomsday scenario - the cancellation of the services the public has come to depend upon every day. For example, the systems for controlling air-traffic would stop, potentially grounding entire fleets. The satellites that power the world's telecoms networks would be knocked out. Hospital patients dependent on electrical equipment would be put at risk.

This could lead to liability claims if customers believe companies did not take enough protective measures during a blackout, which would have significant implications for the insurance industry.
All this can occur as a result of strong geomagnetic storms - severe disturbances in the upper layers of our atmosphere caused by solar storms. The geomagnetic storms induce currents in long conductors such as power lines. These additional currents can trigger voltage collapse or damage extra-high voltage transformers. The economic costs would be catastrophic, according to the report.
The total cost of such a scenario today in Europe and North America is estimated at 2.6 trillion for a five-month blackout period, though it could be as low as 0.6 trillion, the Telegraph reports.
In 1859 a solar superstorm, the so-called Carrington Event, hit Earth's magnetosphere and induced the largest observed geomagnetic solar storm, causing bright auroras that were seen around the world. People who happened to be awake in northeastern US could reportedly read a newspaper by the aurora's light. During the storm telegraph wires in North America and Europe were reportedly destroyed, giving operators electric shocks and knocking out the telegraph network as far away as Australia and Asia for two days. That was before modern methods were used to calculate the force of the solar storms.
In March 1989, the strongest measured geomagnetic storm caused the collapse of Hydro-Qu'ebec's electricity transmission system in Canada. More than six million people lost electric power for nine hours. That cost the government 12.7 billion.
Historical auroral records suggest a return period of 50 years for storms like the one in Quebec and about 150 years for extreme storms such as the Carrington Event. The researchers mapped potential effects on the US territory of an extreme solar storm much alike the Carrington Event in the report.

Geomagnetic latitude, ground conductivity and distance from the coast's highly conducive seawater can measure the region's susceptibility to geomagnetic storms. For example such populated regions as New York and Washington DC strongly attract the sun's electric energy. Other regions include the US Midwest and the Gulf Coast states.
According to the data in the report the total US population at risk of extended power outage from a Carrington-level storm is between 20-40 million, with durations of sixteen days to one or two years.

on Friday July 12,2013....I was dropping friend off in West Brantford at 10 pm when we noticed 5 objects rise in the sw direction from the treetops. They were bright like fire balls and hovered in the sky. I began my video on my iphone but could only capture 3 of them, but there was 5 in the sky. As one disappeared, another one would rise from the tree tops. After a couple min of watching we decided to go in the direction that they were spotted. We lost site of them so we turned around, when we got back to his place we saw another one rise. if you notice on the 11 second video if you zoom in at the end, it seems there is more of a vehicle structure attached to the light. In total we saw approximately 8-9 orbs

We were on the way home from a grocery store at sunset and noticed a very large bright star-like object hovering in the sky. A plane passed above it and the star-like object was under the advancing cloud cover. As we decided to drive west towards it on the highway, we witnessed it quickly flicker and diminish in its light intensity but noticed a dark spherical object in its place before it disappeared. Upon arriving home, it reappeared with the same light intensity with what seemed from the naked eye like a red light at the bottom of the bright object below cloud cover. It did not move and was not a plane but would dim then gain brightness. The cell phone pictures are of poor quality. Of note, there were several sightings the evening previous (several witnesses) over lake Ontario of bright orange/red objects in the sky bouncing around and disappearing to reappear with blue contrails that disappeared with the objects. This area has also had sightings of a bright green orb in the southwest two weeks ago that appears and moves at 90 degree angles within seconds then disappears.

Full Description of event/sighting: Hi Brian, I was on the phone with my sister and I was sitting in my room looking out my window when I noticed a very bright red star to the south west of my house. I was looking at it off and on while in conversation with my sister, and noticed that it looked like it kept going behind this mountain, that's also to my south west. Then I left the room to throw my laundry in and hung up with my sister then went outside to take another look. The thing I was staring at before became very large! At first it looked like a line of lights, about 4 of them all brightly lit sort of reddish then white, they were twinkling those colors. And it was just hovering over the mountain. I was in pure shock! I ran in the house and made my 16 year old brother come out and look because I didn't want to be the only one to see this. He looked and was as shocked as me, he kept asking what the hell is that, it's just hovering there.
He went and got his binoculars and I took a look and I couldn't see the craft itself, all I could see was balls of light all in a row, so I'm not sure if it was just one giant craft or individual. Then they looked like they went lower than the mountain. We looked again through the binoculars and it looked as though it landed on the mountain itself and all we could see was two lights instead of four, like when it was above the mountain. Also one light on the left side kept glowing red a lot, the other was pure white. It appeared to be on the mountain. It then got very dim and all we could see was one little bit of light coming from that area. We waited, nothing, so we came in the house for a few minutes and I went back to my room and looked and all I could see was a very dim light, then all of a sudden they were all back, all four of them and I got my brother again and went back out on the deck.
We watched it go back to hovering above the mountain just as bright as before. Then one light dimmed out, then another and another until they all dimmed and could not be seen. The whole incident lasted about a hour starting from when I was on the phone until they all dimmed out. This experience made me feel very uncomfortable. This mountain is only about 6 miles down the road from me.
Also the strange humming sounds have come back late at night around 2:00 in the morning. About 7 or 8 months or so ago I had something happen to me that has never ever happened before, I'm telling you Brian because I feel like I really need to get this off my chest because its been eating at me for a long time now and I don't know what to make of it.
One night while I was asleep I awoke all of a sudden and I couldn't move, I couldn't move a toe, a finger nothing. I was completely paralyzed. And there was very loud ringing in my ears, so loud it felt like it was in my head and it was making me grind my teeth. It would get loud then soft, and back to loud again. Then I felt like there was something in my room but I couldn't see anything, and I was looking all around with my eyes but couldn't see anything to be afraid of, but was scared out of my mind. Maybe due to the fact that I couldn't move and there was this very loud ringing going on, but I felt not alone. My husband was fast asleep beside me the whole time. Then I guess I went back to sleep somehow and I awoke again two hours later and sat up in bed and thought what the hell ?
I didn't know what to make of it. I looked up sleep paralysis and I figured that must have been what happened to me. I never told anyone because I didn't want anyone to think I'm out of my mind, or I am making things up. Anyway that's been eating at me ever since because it seems that every time I read about UFOs or even see something that could be one and I get this uncomfortable feeling in my stomach, I almost feel nauseated. I haven't reported anything I've seen or heard on here for the past while because the simple fact that I just don't want to see UFOs anymore, but I do and they are here, and I feel that it's my duty to report.
So sorry this was such a lengthy report :-) But like I said I had to tell someone and about my sighting tonight was very, very interesting to say the least. Take care and hope to hear a word from ya soon.

I was warming up my truck and just happene to look up and noticed a moving green light. I noticed it because it wasn't flashing as a normal aircraft would. There was a flashing white light fallowing it then it just stopped flashing and I couldn't see it anymore. The green light made a straight line till it got out of sight behind some trees. Then a solid white light (not flashing)came back from where I last saw the green light and faded out of site as If it burned out. I saw this from Benton mo. Just south of cape girardeau. It was still dark outside but at the speed it was moving I would think it would have been close enough to hear if it was a plane or helicopter.
