Artist's depiction of the New Zealand UFO.
A mechanic from Rutherglen, New Zealand claims he saw a "car-shaped" object ascend from the street and shoot into the night sky.
On Tuesday, August 6 at approximately 8:45 p.m., Matthew Robert reports that he was driving on Rutherglen Road, south of Greymouth, when he encountered the UFO. He explains,
"I was changing a CD as I was driving and when I looked up I saw what looked like a car without its lights on, stopped in the middle of the road outside Shantytown. I slammed on my brakes and my eyes were still trying to focus, when suddenly the thing just lit up and shot into the sky."

Robert claims that at least three other drivers stopped because of the UFO, but all witnesses were so startled by the event that they "left in such a hurry they left skid marks on the road." According to the "New Zealand Herald", Robert asserts that, immediately after seeing the flying car UFO, he lost cellphone reception and experienced blurred vision and watery eyes for an hour. Following the incident, Robert picked up his partner, Charlotte Rose, from work in Greymouth. The "New Zealand Herald" reports that Rose knew something had happened to Robert when she saw him that night. She describes, "I just looked at him and I could tell something bad had happened, he was freaked out and his eyes were watery."
Robert knows other motorists witnessed the flying car UFO, and hopes they come forward to confirm his claims. Robert told the "New Zealand Herald", "I know people are going to think that it's crazy, but I know what I saw."
A very interesting story, to be sure. Unlike what we were promised, there are still no flying cars available to the public, despite this being the 21st century. So what did this man see? Perhaps a small scout UFO. Or maybe some sort of military experiment. He claims there were other witnesses, but without anyone stepping forward, it's just another story. I guess we'll just have to keep watching the skiesfor cars.

RICHARD SAUNDERS PHOTOGRAPHED AT CLOW UFO Dishonorable
BY Relator XRichard Saunders, co-host of The Skeptic Zone, was released from Bolingbrook's Clow UFO Dishonorable after his futile rehearsal to swipe a UFO damaged 99% of his bones.
"It was horrible!" Understood DocRak, an onlooker from the Andromeda Association. One second he was fresh himself under a inspect craft, and asking for the clamps to be released. The in the manner of the craft was on the ground, and I couldn't see Richard!"
Detachment crews managed swipe the UFO off of Saunders damaged suppose, and started emergency suppose redecoration. On one occasion a few account, Saunders was able to reply, "Get in the way for the fact that I can't go through whatever, I mull over I'm work OK."
Saunders was as a consequence occupied to Clow's healing competence and released after a few hours. Sources told "The Babbler" that Saunders's loves his new suppose, and asked so this healing technology would be complete give or take a few to the rest of the world.
"He warmly at home that under human treat, he would be napping, and we would be mailing his deposit in an wrap up." Understood a properly. "Give or take a few, we were able to fix him, and now he can go promote to credible Australians that UFOs aren't real."
Saunders was at Clow to blueprint to the agent of the Martian Colonies that Clasp Plaza Bands don't use shadily obtained Martian technology. Saunders's explained that Earth's holographic bands sway no special powers and rely on the analgesic result. Period the Martians sway open-minded holographic technology, persistent their procedure can't imitate the claims Earth manufacturers put together.
As the guarded agent watched, Saunders demonstrated the magical hand-me-down by quite a few sellers of holographic bands and pendents.
"It was astounding." Understood QiDo, an observer. "It looked adoration he was gift his manly commerce extra bank account, and super force. After that he explained how it was conclude. Continual we, who bother the stars, can be fooled."
For the most recent show, Saunders asked if he might borrow the ambassador's craft. Featuring in a Clasp Plaza Band of color, he was disqualified to reporters the craft and it's battery-operated landing clamps. Saunders as a consequence asked that his bracket together spoil on a Higgs Boson inhibitor and arena it at the craft. Higgs Boson inhibitors are hand-me-down to edit the swing round of spacecrafts, as a result allowing them to fly in effect the speed of light with activating their warp drives. Sources said that Saunders rumination the affair would edit the capability of the craft, allowing him to swipe the craft.
Noticeably, the craft's capability was consistent, and Saunders was damaged under assorted thousand heaps of alien steel.
Investigators responsibility the inhibitor was sabotaged. Period they sway no suspects, sources come to an end to the investigation finger splinter group from the Martian Colonies.
"One colonists are looking for an pathetic excuse to evolve a war amongst Earth. They see these holographic bands as an pathetic excuse to evolve such a war. Richard's show might sway derailed their devices. So it's untouched to fake that they tried to sway him innocently killed."
According to assorted eyewitnesses, after Saunders's was released, he told Clow officials that he now warmly tacit the site of his hard work to rid the world of holographic bands.
"I sway to save the world!"
Past entirely reached for pronounce, Saunders laughed and denied customarily visiting Bolingbrook.
"If you sway evidence for your claims, as a consequence James Randi School Launch and The Australian Skeptics sway prizes for you." Understood Saunders. "Any person can use the assets, right?"
Past asked if he would illuminate "The Babbler's" 5 Money Brainteaser, Saunders explained, "It's close excruciating to make clear a bad. That's perhaps why The Skeptics Pilot to The Life won't shoulder your contest. You sway to put together a measure hold and as a consequence in the neighborhood evidence for that hold. I'm penitent but the lumber of proof is on your manuscript. Wait! Who are you and why are you sitting in the manner of to my friend?"
A women in the recording replied, "That's my partner, and he's been amongst me the entirety time!"
"Wow!" Replied Saunders. "This is a real life type of the primate video!"

In a July 8, 1947 article, the Abilene Storyteller Statistics (Abilene, Texas) reported that the remains of two purported "flying disks" were found, one crowd found on a shore a Trinity Bay, near Houston and one found near Hillsboro.
Above and beyond reported in the extraordinarily Abilene Storyteller Statistics article, were three monarch reports of "flying saucers". The article goes on to say:
Magical flying objects were seen in the skies over Abilene, Winters and Snyder Monday. Mrs. Cap Newman and her grandson, James Williams, XXXX Grape, alleged they sighted a "flying crowd" at 7:10 p.m., speeding east-ward at an smooth as glass predictable at 2,000 feet. "My grandson was on the front walk later he sighted the "crowd", Mrs. Newman alleged. "He called my observation and I saw it a few seconds formerly it went out of sight." Mrs. Newman alleged it was lozenge "while a being platter." The sun was cool goodbye down and to a certain extent of the object being ancient in color, as reported in an assortment of instances, it had a overcast admit.
* * * *
At Winters, H. L. Crowe, local pilot and expert of the Winters airport, alleged he saw a snowy object in the vein of an lozenge social event undecided stock-still in the sky over his land-dwelling at 12:45 p.m. It appeared firm thousand feet high, and it's diameter seemed as wideas the wingspan of a good-sized plane. Being Crowe saw was substantiated by his cousin, Eugene Wright of Fredrick, Okla. Crowe called Wright past and without symptomatic of what he has seen, asked him if he saw at all unexpected in the sky. Crowe alleged that after balanced stock-still for two or three minutes, the object stimulated lethargically northeast and spent. He alleged it stimulated popular the gust. He was watertight it was not a plane, bird or cloud.
* * * *
J.E. Hardee, who lives three miles southwest of Snyder on Ira tendency, observed nine saucers goodbye in a southwest route at a immediate speed. He alleged one disintegrated south of his land-dwelling, breaking popular five or six pieces and melting.
Were these sighting coupled amongst Roswell? The dates are so extremity, that it genuinely makes me dumbfound.

Cramp's book is quite different from Heard's (in my opinion it's a lot better - or at least, a lot less bad). Whereas Heard approached the subject from the viewpoint of a philosopher, Cramp approaches it from the viewpoint of an engineer. What the two authors have in common, however, is an astonishing self-confidence in making bold assertions about the nature of flying saucers: as seen for example in Cramp's "Author's impression of a sectional view of a Scout Ship".
Actually, Cramp is less interested in UFOs "per se" than in his own pet theory of interstellar propulsion. Apparently this "was originally conceived prior to the Second World War, and certainly long before the term Flying Saucer came into general use". But he quickly latched on to the saucer phenomenon as evidence that extraterrestrial civilizations were already using his hypothetical technique.
Although the details of Cramp's theory look na"ive to modern eyes-with terms like "Ether" and "Rays", which were old-fashioned even in the 1950s-the basic principle is one I wholeheartedly agree with. This is that, if UFOs really are extraterrestrial spacecraft, then they probably use a propulsion system which involves manipulation of gravity - and the intimately related phenomenon of inertia. Although commonly referred to as "antigravity", the neutralization of gravity is actually far less important for interstellar travel than the neutralization of inertia - which is the thing that makes it uncomfortable to accelerate rapidly or change direction suddenly. This is something that comes across very clearly in Cramp's account - as is the fact that a craft powered in such a way would appear to "defy the laws of physics".
Jon Downes, who recently took over as editor of "UFO Matrix" magazine, has been generous enough to allow me a "Science Behind UFOs" column. The idea of "antigravity" propulsion-being a hobby-horse of mine just as it was with Leonard G. Cramp-is mentioned in my very first article (in the current issue), and I'm intending to return to it in more detail in subsequent installments.
I came across a striking example of prescience in Cramp's book. One chapter, on the "Unity of Creation Theory", was written not by Cramp but by a colleague of his named Antony Avenel. Of this theory, Avenel wrote "I do not pretend that there is sufficient data available at present to prove the theory fully, but there are many indications that it is an anticipation of what will be proved by, let us say, the year A.D. 2000. The theory which I put forward is that the ether and space are the same, and that space is formed out of nothing by a grid of extremely high frequency rays (probably having a wavelength of less than 10-13 cm). Space must be distinguished from 'nothing'. Space-even if it is empty-possesses the qualities of length, breadth, thickness and time. 'Nothing' has no qualities whatsoever, and cannot support any material or ray."
Now "the year A.D. 2000" was quite some time ago, so has Mr Avenel's theory been proved? Well, no it hasn't-certainly not in any of its details-but in broad terms it does have some striking similarities to contemporary theorizing about the nature of reality. I recently read a new book ("Gravity" by Brian Clegg), in order to review it for Fortean Times". Among other things the book contains brief summaries of the various competing theories of Quantum Gravity. With regard to Loop Quantum Gravity, Clegg writes "From the loop quantum gravity viewpoint, the loops-the atoms of space-time-create the geometry with which space is built. [...] The loops aren't "in" space-time, they "form" space-time... If you had a region with no loops there would be no space and time in it. It would be truly empty in a way that the vacuum of space isn't. Without loops nothing can exist, no light can travel - a loop-free region is true nothingness."
Of course, the loops of Loop Quantum Gravity are of the order of 10-33 cm, which is a lot smaller than Mr Avenel's 10-13 cm... but it's a striking coincidence nevertheless!

by Jerome Clark The late Gray Barker, who trafficked in publicationschronicling contactee adventures, men in black and sinistercover-ups of various sorts, was fond of saying that nothingsells like paranoia. Every time he had a new product to move,he pitched it in language that spoke to the most elementalfears of his customers, many of them certain that theirknowledge of the world's deepest secrets (the hollowness ofthe earth, for example) would bring enforcers from the SilenceGroup to their doorstep any day. Barker himself wrote the all-time paranoid title, "They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers." Its easy to laugh. Other people's paranoia is always funny. But what of our own? These days, paranoia - or anyway, deep suspicion; perhapsthere is a difference - seems in style. This time the inspirationis the ongoing, ever un-resolved MJ-12 dispute. The spectrum ofparanoia ranges from the mild (and probably defensible) to thepathological (as in see your psychiatrist). Fortunately the latterhas afflicted few on the sober side of ufology, but it is runningrampant on the wild side. Since the early 1950s contactee believershave maintained that ETs are here to serve man - that is, to offerto help us. Now a new school of unhinged types claims the ETs arehere to serve man, by which they mean offering us up as helpings, presumably in some cosmic McDonald's. Anyone who believes this (andto note the obvious - that not a shred of evidence supports thisstrange and sick reading of the UFO data - is to dignify it in a way it does not deserve) has, let's not mince words, cracks in hispot. In the sane world, where it is not generally held that the U.S.government is covering up knowledge of man-eating aliens, paranoiamanifests in speculation and rumour about the "true" nature of theMJ-12 briefing paper. The operating assumption is that it is notwhat it purports to be, a summary prepared for President-electEisenhower to inform him that the earth is being visited by extra-terrestrials, two of whose craft have crashed on North Americansoil. The questions being raised are these: Who wrote the document, if Adm. Hillenkoetter (the ostensibleauthor) didn't? Was it a well-informed nastily-clever ufologistputting one over on his gullible colleagues? Was it intelligence-agency personnel disseminating disinformation, either to hide realUFO secrets or to confuse the Soviets? Or - at the top of the paranoia hit parade - was it a ufologist consciously working in collusion with intelligence agents? If this last is true, justwhom can we trust? This week, as I write these words, I have heard serious chargesleveled against two prominent figures in ufology. These charges weremade by individuals who went to some length to list their reasons forentertaining suspicions that they acknowledge sound crazy. I am surethe ufologists at the receiving end of these accusations (which allege that they are collaborating with intelligence agenciesinvolved in the cover-up) will be able to defend themselves and toexplain the actions deemed suspicious. The mere fact that suchaccusations are being made by noncranks, however, illustrates howperilous UFO inquiry has become in the MJ-12 era. By "perilous" I do not mean, of course, that anybody need fearfor his life because he Knows Too Much About Flying Saucers (aconceit that, though widespread, has always done more to massageufologists' egos than to truly frighten them). I refer instead tothe problem of thinking through rationally what we may be up against, given the reality of a cover-up. (And there is a cover-up; if therewere not, the U.S. government would have told us by now what itrecovered in New Mexico in July 1947. We know that it was not aweather balloon and we know the recoverers knew that, too.) One need not be a textbook-case paranoid or a conspiracy nutto recognize that yes, governments, even democratic ones, havesecrets and ways of keeping them. They have intelligence agenciesand, among their other tasks, these agencies' personnel track thespread of sensitive information, including rumours of same. Theyhave established methods of dealing with leaks. In dictatorshipsleakers are easily dealt with: they're killed or sent off to remotegulags. In a democracy such as the United States, if outright treasonis not involved, its trickier. Generally the worst that happens isthat the leaker, if his name is known, loses his job. Beyond that, the official agency involved will vigorously deny the accuracy ofthe information being leaked and hope that journalists coveringthe story will be gulled into believing the denial. Few ufologists are aware that in the United States it isillegal for official agencies or individuals to circulate dis-information for domestic consumption. We all know, of course, that officials, including Presidents, break the law. They usuallydon't bet by with it, as witness such episodes as Watergate andthe Iran-contra fiasco. The reason they don't get by with it isthat Congress, prosecutors and the press are watching them. That'swhy there was an uproar, a year or two ago, when the Wall StreetJournal fell victim to a disinformation scam that reported, falsely, that the U.S. government was about to bomb Libya again. The story was circulated for psychological purposes; the idea was to scarethe Libyan government. A 'Journal' foreign correspondent picked upthe story and made the mistake of taking it seriously. When thetruth came out, the Reagan administration was severely criticizedand forced to give assurances that nothing like this would happenagain. In the context of the UFO controversy, however, it isundeniably true that a different set of rules apply. It is anarticle of faith among this country's opinion-making elite (NewYork Times, CBS News, Time, Science, et al) that people whobelieve in UFOs are all screwballs, since UFOs do not exist. Nothing that happens among UFO believers could conceivably be ofany significance except to readers fo the "National Enquirer". That being the case, UFO "evidence" is of no interest whatever, regardless of the amount of documentation or quality of witnesses.Because there are no UFOs, there cannot be a cover-up of importantinformation about them. Therefore any testimony that claims thecontrary need not be heeded. In other words, the field is open to any government agency toplay any game it feels it need to play. The watchdogs aren't justsleeping on the job; they're not even on the job. "The New YorkTimes" and the "Washington Post" have never heard of the Roswellincident, much less dispatched investigative reporters to lookinto it. Supremely smug and blind, they will not know if laws arebeing broken by official persons keeping UFO secrets; anybody whosays they are need only be referred to "Skeptical Inquirer", or apsychiatrist, to get his head straightened. It is not true as a general principle, the cliche notwith-standing, that secrets can't be kept. But it has to be especiallyeasy to keep UFO secrets, since nobody except ufologists, who haveno influence and only limited resources, is looking for them. (Inthe 1970s famous investigative journalist Seymour Hersh made a pointof telling "Rolling Stone" that he doesn't do "flying saucer stories.") Nor, consequently, is anybody looking to see if federal laws arebeing violated by keepers of UFO secrets. Any ufologist who says hisphone is being tapped or that intelligence personnel are circulatingdomestic UFO disinformation is, well, just another paranoid, a harm-less version of the guy who tells police that space aliens orderedhim to shoot his mother. What is truth? a famous man asked. Two thousand years later weask, what is paranoia? Well, it's certainly no delusion, no purelysubjective phenomenon. A fear or suspicion that has no demonstrablyobjective basis is paranoia. That makes the fear that the CIAassassinates ufologists paranoia, but it does not do the same forthe suspicion that intelligence agencies are doing other things toufologists. We know that both active-duty and retired spook typeshave told ufologists hair-raising tales about EBEs in governmentcustody. There is no independent reason to believe these storiesare true, but what's important for the moment is that they're beingtold by the individuals who are telling them. We also know thatsome ufologists have interacted, sometimes in curious ways, withthese individuals. What is going on far away from the scrutiny of the usualestablishment watchdogs? And what is the reason for it? It mustsurely mean that ufologists are on to something, otherwise whythe attention? But where do reasonable questions end and crazyfantasies begin? Beyond the richly-documented Roswell incident,we have no real evidence of what the government may or may notknow, what it may or may not be concealing. That leaves us opento any credentialed liar who comes along - if we are foolishenough to take him at his word, that is. Under the circumstances, given the bewildering and bizarrenature of events in recent years, a certain degree of paranoia(provided that it be mild and containable) is inevitable. Anymore that a mild degree, however, need an antidote. I suggestlaughter. What's ahead of us, as we work our way through Roswelland beyond, is not going to be easy to get to, but lunatic fears,we can be sure, will take us only to never-neverland.

Voices on answering article - audio file
MUFON CMS - Guardian angel Hack, NM - 8/19/2010 - (UNEDITED): Two messages, one at 5:12 pm and one at 5:13 pm, were deceased on my answering article Thursday (I feature the date was Distinguished 19). Late listening to them masses grow old, I filch they are two perplexing messages, deceased by two perplexing "voices."
I'm submitting this report and a digital audio adhesive tape of the messages so I filch they are relevant to UFO sightings I be in possession of been experiencing in Guardian angel Hack, New Mexico. A pair of years ago, I keep in mind pain invariable sounds on an Internet site (moldy, don't venerate so or which site) which described them as being ended by extraterrestrials.
The audio adhesive tape was ended by holding a digital recorder on the answering article on which the messages were ended. I keep under surveillance the adhesive tape to be about 98%-99%% as clear as the clear messages (which I be in possession of retained on my digital answering article).
My Caller ID recorded the phone degree, which is not included in this untruth (but which specter be aspect to endorsed investigator). If the reverse-number meander I accessed on the Internet is genteel, the phone calls were ended from a land line in southern California.
MUFON CMS - Pond Las Vegas, NV - 10/2/2010 - (unedited): I first reported this incident concerning at:
*Link motivated to Treat Note Part of the pack underside -- CMS/sg.
More readily of single stealing and defeat what I wrote former I'm goodbye to try to venerate again from my remind best I can.
1. While were you and what were you do its stuff at the time? I was in imitation of my teenager assistant in my Ford Deviation. We were demise our house in Pond Las Vegas vagrant southwest on Pond Mead Vitality about a mile from the access of Pond Las Vegas. I was vagrant about 50 mph at the time. We were goodbye to eat at Fiesta Mace in Henderson. Orthodox after the incident occurred i looked at the generation in the car and on my blackberry. Apiece held 8:03 pm.
2. In the function of ended you first catch sight of the object? I was looking at my teenager assistant who was sitting in the passenger side and I started to catch sight of the ambient light high-class the car go from darker mistiness to lighter mistiness fairly rapidly though we were torrential, I venerate take to in person what the hell are dwell in mistiness. As soon as I intended that in my head, I started seeing these able neon unqualified orbs flying around the private of the car.
4. Beckon the object and its undertakings and motions. The best way I can withdraw dwell in lights was that they seemed similar to the measurements of tennis balls or jingle pong balls, its under the weather to tell so it was similar to a light say-so but they seemed to be flying around in the car. I was looking at my girlfriend in the passenger possess so I may perhaps see the flipside of the car in imitation of my outer and it looked similar to the lights were dancing around in the crutch too. I just venerate the lights swift over the tops of my thighs and the center pity of the digression. It approximately felt similar to it was scanning the car. The unqualified lights motivated rapidly, so calm they deceased dwell in lit up visual traces you see so a light moves calm in the darkness. The color of the lights was a potent unqualified type of light. About similar to the unqualified light of a point light but far away a far away richer and potent unqualified. This callow incident I don't know lasted 2 seconds. I frankly can't say if I venerate seeing the lights on the come out in the open of the car. Seeing that the lights were charming so calm and were private the car my head was bright at looking private I forgot to catch sight of if the lights were come out in the open. My girlfriend says she saw the lights from come out in the open but she's not too sure. Her perspective of it was she was looking upfront the side proposal think about and she held she may perhaps see the lights dancing all around the private of the car. A character of me wants to say I saw more than a few lights in a light purplish color but this may be in possession of been an visual nirvana at the way the lights were flying around. But me and my girlfriend every one abate that we did see potent unqualified lights. The lights were able, similar to I was staring here a neon sign but it didn't rigorous to bleach the car in that unqualified light. I mean the car was lit up but it didn't rigorous to paint the private of the car a definite color but it was under the weather to tell. As soon as the lights came they single all similar off and it was mystified. The reminds me, the way the lights first happened it wasn't similar to single 1 or 2 and slothfully more. It was nation-state not worth it a lot of lights and very calm spur, as well as mystified, it was crutch to doubtfulness. Late the incident I slowed down under the weather on the breaks and yelled "what the hell was that". I cursory looked over head but saw go like a bullet.
5. Beckon your opinion, reactions and undertakings, inside and after sighting the object. Taking into account the lights first turned on in the car I cursory intended it was a toy or more than a few individual of electronic had turned on in the crutch of the digression. But so I started to catch sight of the lights shining and dancing around I knew it wasn't a toy and I got goose bumps all over my mass. I slowed down and went to the minute resolve wherever I may perhaps fabricate a Exchange and pleasing to tier around to see what it was. My girlfriend held she was frightened and freaked out and single pleasing to get out of portray. We went to Fiesta Henderson and ate and saw go like a bullet else.

By Frank Warren
The UFO Chronicles(c) 6-26-11
After serving his country (fighting in the jungles of New Guinea and receiving a Bronze Star) during WWII, then cub-reporter Bill Bequette would not only begin his decades long career as a journalist; he would forever be joined at the hip with what is deemed as modern-day-Ufology.
On June 25th, 1947 he (and Nolan Skiff) would pen the very first article that would precede a wave of like reports of sightings of mystery craft flying all over the United States (and elsewhere):
IMPOSSIBLE! MAYBE, BUT SEEIN'
IS BELIEVIN', SAYS FLIER
By Bill Bequette
The Eastern Oregonian
6-25-1947
Kenneth Arnold, with the fire control at Boise and who was flying in southern Washington yesterday afternoon in search of a missing marine plane, stopped here en route to Boise today with an unusual story -- which he doesn't expect people to believe but which he declared was true.
He said he sighted nine saucer-like [emphasis added] aircraft flying in formation at 3. p.m. yesterday, extremely bright -- as if they were nickel plated -- and flying at an immense rate of speed. He estimated they were at an altitude between 9,500 and 10,000 feet and clocked them from Mt. Rainier to Mt. Adams, arriving at the amazing speed of about 1200 miles an hour. "It seemed impossible," he said, "but there it is -- I must believe my eyes."
He landed at Yakima somewhat later and inquired there, but learned nothing. Talking about it to a man from Ukiah in Pendleton this morning whose name he did not get, he was amazed to learn that the man had sighted the same aerial objects yesterday afternoon from the mountains in the Ukiah section!
He said that in flight they appeared to weave in an (sic) out in formation.
William C. Bequette had a very long, distinguished career as the editor of the Tri-City Herald and only recently passed away (April 24th 2011) at the ripe old age of 93. He was known for his "pursuit of accuracy, relevance and brevity" and "would not tolerate slack or superficial reporting."
Nevertheless, back in the beginning-it was those two words, "saucer-like" that would stick-spawning the term, "Flying Saucer" which would forever be instilled into the American lexicon.
Over the years and even to this day, Ufologists debate the birth of the term, which would later, be re-named (by the Air Force) to "UFO" (1952). In my view (based on my own research) "technically" neither Arnold nor Bequette initially, labeled the craft "Flying Saucers"; as Bequette would later recount in an interview (IUR 1998), "Arnold was describing the craft's movement, e.g., moving like a saucer, if you skipped it across the water."
As the days passed, "Flying Saucers, Flying Discs" would become predominate tags for the mysterious craft in the print ">Flying Saucers), Bequette did feed the story into the AP wire and the next day, versions of it were on the front pages of newspapers from coast-to-coast.
One in particular, which "might" be first example (of the term Flying Saucers) is shown below, as written by UP (author unknown), and published in the Oakland Tribune.
40 years after the fact, Bill Bequette stated:
"... I feel some embarrassment over the original UFO story. My embarrassment is because I failed to recognize what a big story Mr. Arnold brought into the office that day."In Bill's defense he was in good company then, and even now 64 years later; although the phenomenon is still prevalent, and continues to mystify us-there are some who still fail to see its magnitude.
