It is a slow news day, and a lot of readers have wanted me to post the story of my own personal encounter with Bigfoot, so here it is.
Way back in July of 1990 an ex-girlfriend and I were returning from a trip out to California, (I lived in New Mexico at the time) when we decided to stop by the Grand Canyon. My ex had never seen the canyon, so we decided to take the detour off I-40 and give it a look.
We spent a couple of hours along the rim of the canyon admiring the scenery. It was starting to get towards evening and the sun was beginning to set, so we decided to pack it in and start back on our long journey home. Being the typical male that I am, I pulled out my trusty road map to see if there was a shortcut back to the highway. I quickly discovered that Highway 180 cut through the mountains and led straight back to I-40 in Flagstaff. This route would save us a ton of time, so we headed out from the Grand Canyon towards our destination.
The trip started out normal enough. Just a typical drive through the mountains. There were few cars on the highway that evening, as I remember it, and the road was kinda curvy....winding through the mountains. By this time the sun had set and it was getting dark.
This is when it happened.
I remember coming around a curve in the highway and there was a long straight-away in front of us before the road turned again.
As we began to proceed down the straight section, we both noticed a very large animal walking down the right side of the road. Since I had just came out of a curve, the car wasn't moving very fast, and when I saw the animal, I slowed the car even further.
I remember my ex exclaiming, "Is that a bear?"
As we came closer to the animal, it became apparent quickly that what we were looking at was not a bear. There was a very large, hairy, mass walking away from us on two legs. I can still remember the arms swaying as it strolled naturally down the side of the road away from us.
As we got closer, about 50 yards or more as I remember it, the cars headlights shown past the creature. I was at that time that our companion on the highway became aware of our presence. It stopped, and I stopped.
I remember this vividly, the animal went to turn around to get a look at us. Now this was odd, because the animal had no neck, or not much of one, so it couldn't turn it's head to look at us, it had to turn its whole upper body.
That apparently wasn't good enough for the creature so it turned around completely to face us.
I remember my ex saying nervously, "What the hell is that?" I don't think that I answered her. I just sat there in amazement at what I was looking at, somehow trying to wrap my my mind around it.
What was there before us was this giant.....well ape. It was about seven to eight feet tall (about the same height as a road sign to my estimation), covered in brown fur, large....with very little definition. That is to say that it didn't have a typical human build. Kinda built like a 'brick-wall', like football lineman, large from head to toe.
Facially the animal looked a lot like a character from "Planet of the Apes." There were areas on the face that looked 'hairless', mostly around the eyes, nose and mouth. The eyes were like a cats, they reflected green in the light from the cars headlights. Overall looking very much like a 'great ape'.
The animal was covered in very 'shaggy' fur, possibly an inch or more in length. On the arms the hair was twice as long or so, than it was on the head and body. The color was mostly a chocolate brown color, but I remember there being lighter spots in some areas.
I had heard enough stories from my father, who was an avid hunter and owned a gun shop that catered to hunters, and seen enough TV to know exactly what we were confronted with, a Bigfoot.
The Bigfoot was very curious about us and our car. I could read it's facial expressions. I remember that I wasn't scared, the animal never acted in an aggressive manor.It just seemed to be as perplexed about my ex and I, as we were about it.
I remember the Bigfoot paused, and rubbed its tong across its front teeth, again in curiosity, like it was calculating it's next move.
It took one or two steps towards us and my ex went ballistic. Apparently she took the moves as a sign that it was going to attack us, I thought that it was just coming over to get a better look at us, anyway she pushed back into her seat and began screaming. The Bigfoot stopped its forward approach when she went off. Puzzled by the commotion, it stopped, then took two long strides into the timber, disappearing from site.
My girlfriend stopped her panic attack and we sat there silently looking at the spot where the creature once stood. I think we sat there for some time before I snapped out of my trance and decided to get out of there in case the Bigfoot came back.
I remember driving over onto the left hand side of the road, just in case the creature can charging out of the woods at us or something.
We looked into the woods as we drove past the spot where it had been, and saw nothing.
Amazingly after we had gotten back on I-40 in Flagstaff, we both acted as if nothing had happened.
In the days, and months, after our encounter, my girlfriend refused to talk about the incident. We, of course, broke up months later, and I haven't seen her since.
For years I kept the story about my run-in with Bigfoot to myself. I didn't want to be ridiculed, or called a liar, so I kept quite about it.
It wasn't until my wife April and I had been married for a few years that I shared the story with her. She was always perplexed at why I was so obsessive about TV shows and books about Bigfoot, so I told her my story. At first she had a hard time believing it, but she knows that I am an honest person, and she has seen how emotional I have been about it. She believes me now.
Wanting to help serious efforts to study the animal, I submitted my story to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization in 2005 (You can read the report - HERE). I was interviewed not too long after that by Cliff Barackman about the encounter. Barackman, who has done extensive research in both Arizona and California, told me that my sighting was just one of several that had been reported in that same area, that same year.
Now I know some of you out there are not going to believe me, that's okay, I don't care if you do or don't. I know what I saw.
You never ever believe in these sort of things, until they are right in front of you. Seeing is definitely believing!

Once upon a time, Area 51 didn't exist. Now, apparently, it does. And it's still one of the most secret places in America.
After decades of denial, the government now publicly acknowledges that Area 51 -- seen below in a satellite image -- is a secret military installation north of Las Vegas. It has been variously referred to as Groom Lake, Dreamland and The Ranch.
The George Washington University National Security Archive published a report last week called "The Secret History of the U-2," describing top secret development programs of high-altitude spy plane technology developed by the CIA during the Cold War.
For decades, conspiracy theorists -- along with UFO believers and organizations -- have speculated that Area 51 was also home to crashed flying saucers and alien bodies.
But the newly declassified CIA report may disappoint those who might have preferred reams of pages of information detailing the inner workings of interplanetary spaceships or the results of ET autopsies. If that kind of stuff "is" at the Nevada test site, it's still classified, not to be seen by prying eyes.
In fact, out of the 400 pages in the newly released CIA document, UFOs are only mentioned once. Chapter 2, titled "Developing the U-2," offers the following UFO reference:
"High-altitude testing of the U-2 soon led to an unexpected side effect -- a tremendous increase in reports of unidentified flying objects. In the mid-1950s, most commercial airliners flew at altitudes between 10,000 and 20,000 feet, and military aircraft, like the B-47s and B-57s, operated at altitudes below 40,000 feet. Consequently, once U-2s started flying at altitudes above 60,000 feet, air-traffic controllers began receiving increasing numbers of UFO reports.
"At this time, no one believed manned flight was possible above 60,000 feet, so no one expected to see an object so high in the sky.
"U-2 and later OXCART flights accounted for more than one-half of all UFO reports during the late 1950s and most of the 1960s."
Through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request filed by the Archive in 2005, the declassified documents were finally released, including the following CIA map, clearly showing where Area 51 is located.
In 1989, the public hadn't heard much about this secret base until George Knapp started digging into stories and eyewitness testimony from those claiming there was a lot more going on at the old Nevada Test Site, created in the 1950s to test nuclear weapons.
"I dug up all kinds of references to Area 51, including maps that the Department of Energy and the Atomic Energy Commission had both put out, listing it as Area 51. I bought a phone book of the test site from an FBI agent that lists Area 51," said Knapp, a multi-Emmy and Peabody award-winning investigative reporter for CBS Las Vegas news affiliate, KLAS-TV.
"I really can't quite figure out what all the fuss is. I do know that, in the 1980s, the CIA, for some reason, started removing references to the base, taking it off maps and suddenly it disappeared, and that's when things got real spooky," Knapp told The Huffington Post.
"It's kind of humorous for the CIA to try to erase it from public memory, and now for it to return it and it's somehow big news," Knapp said. "I'm reminded of an employee manual that we found from Area 51 about 15 years ago, and it had a whole section about cover stories: What lies to tell to your friends and family about where you work and what you do. That's the business they're in."
Knapp, pictured at right, doesn't think much of all the media excitement generated by the recent acknowledgement of Area 51.
"What news? We've reported it for 30 years. It's been confirmed by both the Air Force, CIA and the Atomic Energy Commission many times. But if it brings attention to the National Security Archive, so much the better, because they do great work."
And what about all the speculation, rumors and eyewitness accounts of strange-looking craft performing amazing maneuvers in the skies around Area 51 -- are these all based on simple misidentifications of military spy technology?
"Over the course of the years that we've worked on the story, I have more than two dozen people who have worked there at different times -- in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s -- who have told me bits and pieces of the same story, that they have seen something that looked like a flying saucer out there. That we were taking them apart to figure out how they work, that they saw them in hangars, in test flights, and have seen them on the ground," said Knapp.
"The stories differ from person to person. But these are people who did not know that the other ones were talking to me, who have given me the information sometimes reluctantly, and do not want their names used, but they all said the same thing: We had something that sure as hell looked and acted like UFOs out there!"

ORDINARY PEOPLE - EXTRAORDINARY EVENTS.In all, over a hundred people witnessed the Mothman sightings, providing a wealth of testimony as to its appearance and behavior. What follows is the most common description of the creature and an artists impression of what the creature may have looked like:
Like all eyewitness statements there are a wide variety of accounts and descriptions of the Mothman. Despite this, a very clear and consistent picture has emerged of a dark coloured creature, a mixture of grey, olive green and brown, standing around seven feet tall and having the torso of a muscular human. Witnesses suggest that it had no discernable facial features except for its piercing red eyes which were said to have an almost hypnotic effect on those who witnessed it. The eyes in 99% of the sightings are described as being bright-red and hypnotizing. The eyes are also described as being reflective of light, but glowing and "much" more intensive than a normal animal. When in the presence of the creature, eyewitness describe a "helpless" or "hypnotizing" feeling, such as not being able to run, walk, or in some cases even move. The gaze of the eyes is also described to be the deciding factor of not being able to describe the facial features. When eyewitnesses describe the hypnotization, they describe it as being drawn in by the eyes, and everything else becoming a blur of vision. The creature is generally described as having leathery wings like that of a bat, with a wingspan of around 10-12 feet (3.04-3.66 metres). Witnesses who encountered it reported being quite terrified by its presence. Seemingly, it was able to appear as if from nowhere and take flight with equal ease.
Marcella Bennett, one of the many witnesses who encountered the creature described it thus "It rose up slowly from the ground; a big grey thing. Bigger than a man, with terrible glowing eyes". She also noted that the creature made a screeching sound like a 'woman screaming' as it flew off.
It is well documented that the sightings of the Mothman dramatically and tragically concluded in December 1968 when the Silver Bridge collapsed into the Ohio River below, during rush hour, killing 46 people.
To my knowledge, no direct evidence has ever been produced that would suggest that the Mothman either prophesised this event or directly caused it but the general impression of evil that witnesses had all experienced when they encountered this creature left them in no doubt as to a connection.
RETURN OF THE VAMPIRE.Less than two years after the last Mothman sighting in America, a disturbing phenomenon began to be reported in the Highgate area of North London. Ordinary people suddenly began to report strange and frightening encounters with a tall dark 'vampire like' creature. The activity centred on Highgate cemetery (Right), a rambling Victorian cemetery that sits atop Highgate Hill. The British media immediately seized on the vampire idea in the same way as their American counterparts had seized on the 'Batman' idea; and the Highgate Vampire was so named.
Like the Mothman sightings, there was no documented history of any such supernatural creature fitting its description being directly associated with the cemetery. What is interesting to note is that nearly 50 years earlier in London, in the spring of 1922, an enormous black bat-like creature with a wingspan of six feet (1.8 metres) was reported flying around a West Drayton Church during the night of a full moon. Several terrified witnesses watched the creature dive into the churchyard, where it roamed the tombs. When two policemen gave chase through the church cemetery, the creature let out a loud blood-curdling screech, and flew into the air to evade them. It's interesting to ponder if there is a connection between this little known report and either the Mothman or the Highgate Vampire, which we will look at in more detail now.
In 1969, sightings of the so-called Highgate Vampire began without any warning of unusual paranormal activity and were witnessed by some very ordinary and very credible members of the public. So prolific were the sightings, that paranormal investigator David Farrant, of the British Psychic and Occult Society, was called in to investigate the case.
Thirty years later, David Farrant is still the leading expert on the Highgate Vampire, and tends to discount the 'Vampire' label as an unfortunate consequence of the popularity of 'the Hammer House of Horror' amongst the public at that time. He maintains with absolute certainty that the Highgate Vampire was neither a hoax nor a vampire, but nevertheless it was something very real.
During the course of his investigations, which took place over several years, David interviewed and collected statements from a great many eyewitnesses. Incredibly, during the course of his research, David actually encountered the creature himself. In his own words David describes his encounter with the creature in the cemetery:
"The figure at first, really looked 'real' at the onset, I put this down to maybe one or two local people having heard stories about 'vampires', and somebody getting dressed up as one and maybe trying to frighten passers by at they went past the top gate.
But this was definitely not the case. To start with, it was a bitterly cold night, but the immediate area had gone even colder, the figure (or whatever it was) was over 7ft tall - although it was hard to tell as you could not really see the bottom of it and it could have been floating above the ground. But what really convinced me was the fact that it seemed to have red eyes that were positioned in a vague 'black shape' that I took to be its head.
It is difficult to describe, except that it seemed to be trying to drain me of energy, and I felt almost as if I was being 'hypnotised'. It is for this reason that I mentally repeated a kabbalistic incantation, which I had been taught earlier when I first became involved in these matters.
As a psychic investigator, I have witnessed many strange things over the years (changes in temperature, objects moving, fleeting figures and the like), but that is the first time I have ever seen anything like that!"
In addition to his own personal experience, David has a wealth of independent witness testimony that all point to the same thing; An elusive creature about seven feet tall with glowing red eyes that seemed to exert a psychic influence over those it encounters and which had a menacing aura that left its witnesses very frightened.
COINCIDENCE OR CONNECTION?Eyewitness testimony from both sides of the Atlantic is surprisingly consistent, which is why there is a distinct possibility that these two cases could be linked. Almost all the witnesses reported the creature as being a similar height, dark and menacing to the point of causing terror in its victims. They all reported that the creature had piercing red eyes that seemed to exert a psychic influence on those who encountered it.
Neither location had a history of paranormal activity of that nature but once it started it was on an unprecedented scale. The sightings at both locations seemed to start for no reason and stopped just as suddenly. The proximity of the time frame between the two events is also interesting to consider, as there was less than two years between the two. Did the Mothman mysteriously disappear only to return to our world as the creature known as the Highgate Vampire? In many respects we have raised more questions than we have so far answered, but the art of paranormal investigations entails asking such questions, conducting the research and keeping an open mind; only then can we hope to find the answers.

UFO SIGHTING IN MAIZE, KANSAS ON JULY 14TH 2013 - GREEN "T" SHAPED ENTITY SEEN NEAR MOON
Sunday July 14, 2013 - 9:00-9:15 P.M. WSW direction about 50deg azimuth my wife was out at the store and when she came home, she was running into the house and very excited. she told me there was something out by the moon that she had never seen before. when i went out to look, i saw a green, almost "T" shaped object floating around the moon. it looked like it was between me and the moon but stayed close to the moonlight. i would say it was at least 5 miles away, maybe more. it floated around the moon going in counterclockwise cirlces for about 2-3 minutes and i was able to snap a couple of pictures with my phone. after about 4 minutes though it began its departure. it shot south and up and then north and up in a zig zag pattern and then it was gone. it did not accelarate at an unbelievable rate but it was faster than anything i have ever seen. and i live in the air capitol! once i saw it start leaving i ran inside to grab my good camera (my wife is a professional photographer) that would have been much better than my phone. i watched the skies for about another hour afterwards but saw nothing else except a few airplanes pass by. again, i live in an area with a lot of airplane traffic, these were nothing out of the ordianry. i have the pictures i took on my phone and i have the negatives to prove they werent photoshopped. i have played with some editing software a bit to try and clear the pictures up but the phone's camera severely limited me. i made some crops so the entity could be seen better. i also have the originals.

We were at a cottage on Matthew Bay - Georgian bay. We were 4 adults and 2 boys - 11 years old. We were looking at the stars and I was explaining: "that is a satellite, that is an airplane, that is a shooting star". I have to say I am looking at the stars for the last 40 years old and recognize a plane from a satellite. Suddenly we see a star growing in brightness for about 10 seconds and we were all looking and wondering what it is. It was sitting in the same spot. I was ready to say "this is a plane coming toward us, that's why we see the light growing and appearing like sitting" but then it started to ascend with incredibly speed, straight up, becoming smaller and smaller. I think it disappeared in about 4 or 5 seconds. I have never seen something like this before. So I said "That, my friends, was a U. F. O."

Solar Wind Stream to reach Earth around February 10, 2010

A solar wind stream [watch animation above for coronal mass ejections occurring on the 1st and 7th] flowing from a coronal hole should reach Earth on or about February 10th.
The solar wind is a stream of electrically charged particles blown constantly from the Sun. The magnetosphere is a cavity formed when the solar wind encounters the Earth's magnetic field. When the solar wind density is high and comes up against the magnetosphere, the magnetosphere gets compressed. When the wind density is low, the magnetosphere expands. Researchers discovered that the solar wind contains periodic structures of high and low density, driving a periodic "breathing" action of the magnetosphere and the global generation of magnetic waves.
It's known that if the frequency of these waves matches the frequency of the electrons in their motion in the Van Allen belt, the electrons can be accelerated, significantly boosting their energies. The process is similar to a boogyboarder catching a wave. Some electrons "ride the wave" and gain so much energy that they can then damage expensive spacecraft, satellites and ground base electronics if severe enough.
From time to time, actually around once every month, there is a strange increase in the radiation levels, a sudden spike that creates extremely strong streams of electrons that produce damage to electrical girds and appliances on Earth and can affect the DNA of an unfortunate astronaut caught outside the shuttle or the space station.

This can affect satellites, can disturb GPS systems and can induce unexpected currents in the electrical grid. What causes this strange acceleration? The most recent quest for the solution of this old puzzle was taken by a team of scientists at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico that has examined data collected over the past few years from the laboratory's instruments mounted on five different satellites in geosynchronous orbit at various altitudes.
Recorded instances of the effects of solar winds on earth are the displacement of the magnetic pole between 900 and 1500 B.C. from its original position near Murmansk in Russia to its present position near Canada. This displacement is attributed to the Aurorae. In 1989 geomagnetic storms caused the destruction of the Hydro Quebec grid and many Canadians had to go without power for nine hours. The same storm affected the microchips in computers and caused the disruption of the Stock market in Canada. In 1998, the backup files of the heavily used communication satellite Galaxy were destroyed by a geomagnetic storm in outer space caused by solar winds, consequently halting the service to of 45 million pagers.
They found the phenomenon is caused by an unknown acceleration process inside the Van Allen belts. The interesting part of the study is the fact that it shows how the Sun is not the only one responsible for the sudden increase in radiation hitting Earth, although many times it coincides with the incidence of solar storms.

UPDATE: BIG SUNSPOT: The sudden emergence of big sunspot 1045 over the weekend has caused a sharp uptick in solar activity. The active region has produced three M-class and almost a dozen C-class solar flares since it appeared on Saturday. The strongest blast, an M6-class eruption on Feb. 7th, may have hurled a coronal mass ejection toward Earth. High-latitude sky watchers should be alert for auroras in the nights ahead as a result of this activity. Also, ham radio operators are picking up strong solar radio bursts using shortwave receivers. News organizations across the world were taken in -- once again -- by a hoax that was perpetrated more than 50 years ago.
The infamous "Hottel memo" was posted on several sites, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation's "vault." It was touted as "newly revealed" this week. The memo supposedly confirms that alien ships landed in the U.S. in the late 1940s and the information was covered up.
But in fact the infamous memo has been making the rounds for several years. (It was never classified). The "vault" is simply a newer system put in place by the FBI over the past week to make accessing documents easier.
The memo describes what was told to an FBI agent, Guy Hottel, who was the special agent in charge of the Washington field office. It describes an "air force investigator" who described finding a crashed craft in New Mexico, and also said that alien bodies were found in it. Hottel only reports what the unnamed informant says, not what his own conclusions are. The informant says that the craft was disabled by "high powered radar" in the area.
Not only is the information not first-hand and far removed from New Mexico, it is connected to a 60-year-old hoax that resulted in a conviction for fraud.
The memo was the end of a long chain of tale-telling. The Hottel memo repeats a story from the "Wyandotte Echo", a legal newspaper in Kansas City, Kansas in January of 1950, which was repeated to Guy Hottel by an Air Force investigator who read the story (and pasted into a memo himself. Such practices were common in the days before scanning documents was possible and memos had to be typed out). That news story draws from the account of a Rudy Fick, a local used car dealer.
Fick got the story from a two men, I. J. Van Horn and Jack Murphy, who said they got the story from a man named "Coulter" - actually a radio station advertising manager named George Koehler. Koehler got the story from Silas Newton.
The hoax begins with Newton and his accomplice, Leo A. Gebauer. Newton and Gebauer were peddling "doodlebugs" -- devices that could supposedly find oil, gas, gold, or anything else that the target of the con was interested in finding.
In an interview in 2003 for a documentary called "The Other Side of Truth", written and directed by Paul Kimball, the late Karl Pflock, a UFO researcher, described the original hoax that led to the Hottel memo. Pflock notes that the difference between Newton and Gebauer's con and many others that preceded it was they said their doodlebugs were better because they were based on alien technology.
The two men told Frank Scully, a columnist for "Variety", about the UFO crash. There were no other witnesses (local newspaper accounts don't show anything for the relevant dates). Scully claimed in his book that Newton and Gebauer told him the military had taken the craft for secret research.
Meanwhile, the story of the alien technology piqued the interest of J.P. Cahn of the "San Francisco Chronicle. "Cahn managed to convince Newton and Gebauer to give him a sample of the "alien" metal, which turned out to be aluminum.
Cahn's account of the alien ship hoax - and the two swindlers -- appeared in "True" magazine in 1952. The result was that several people who had been conned by Newton and Gebauer came forward. One of their victims was Herman Glader, a Denver millionaire who had the wherewithal to press charges. Newton and Gebauer were convicted of fraud the next year.
The Aztec hoax appeared again in 1986, when William Steinman and Wendelle Stevens published a book called "UFO Crash at Aztec." In 1998 Linda Mouton Howe, a documentary filmmaker, claimed to have government documents proving that an alien ship had landed in Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947. That proof was the Hottel memo.
Several news outlets have repotted the memo as "proof" that the government knew about crashes of alien spacecraft in Roswell. But not only does the memo say no such thing, it isn't even connected to the town of Roswell.
There are several other clues that something is wrong. The FBI has several documents that point to their knowledge of Newton and Gebauer both, as fraud schemes involving mining were common in the southwest at that time.
In addition, an alien craft disabled by "high-powered radar" is implausible given that ordinary airplanes can fly without incident through radar, and "high power" radar is not enough to damage even conventional electronics. (Radars were even less powerful in the 1940s). In addition, the description in the Hottel memo does not match any of those given at the time for purported Roswell UFOs.

Two people were paralyzed and one person died. The cause of death was ruled as "unknown" by the coroner. All of the people hit by the light were left with puncture and burn marks on their skin. The investigation, codenamed "Operation Saucer," collated over 15 hours of film, 500 photos, and hundreds of documents with detailed drawings and interviews with over 3,000 witness. The files were to remain classified by the Brazilian Government until 1997, when UFO investigator's A.J. Gevaerd and Marco Petite of UFO Magazine were allowed partial access. They were also contacted by the then retired Captain Hollanda who gave them a vivid recollection of the whole series of events.
