I would like to set a few things straight for the record about the whole "Project Silverbug" story. For starters, this is not a 'new' story at all even though it's being touted as such. A declassified version of the "Joint ATIC-WADC Report on Project Silver Bug" from February 15, 1955 was actually posted on the CUFON website in 1998 which included diagrams, design concepts and proposed specifications for a several different craft configurations. Even Wired's Dangerroom picked up the story of "Project 1794" and ran with it like it was brand new information.First, some brief background on the Avro Canada project..."It was born in the Cold War era as a possible way of hiding high performance aircraft from Russian A-bombs, but it remains shrouded in mystery. The only mention the Air Force makes of that project is in The Report on Project Silver Bug, written in 1955 by the Air Technical Intelligence Center and Wright Air Development Center, It proposed the mounting of a research and development project into the building of a jet-propelled flying saucer, capable of both vertical takf and landing along with supersonic speeds up to 1,500 mph. If successful, the craft would have been based underground, thus avoiding the need for long runways and easily-distinguished bases which would have been easily taken out by a single nuclear bomb or missile warhead. More here..."There were quite a few configurations proposed by the Avro Canada company, but only one of them ever made it to the actual working prototype phase, and that was the "Avrocar" It famously went on to become the joke that's forever been associated with the Silver Bug project.But the ultimate goal was to build a VTOL saucer shaped craft capable of Mach 2+ using conventional jet engines arranged in a radial pattern. "In 1954, a memo was fired off to CIA department heads demanding intelligence on new 'saucer-like' flying machines being developed by Britain and Canada. So began the race to develop the most unlikely weapon of the Cold War. The year was 1952 and the cold war was at full chill. Joe McCarthy's Un-American Activities Committee was looking for reds under beds, and UFO sightings were spreading like an epidemic across the United States. Even air-force pilots reported being pursued by flying saucers. The sense of dread was turning to frenzy and the CIA decided something had to be done. In one of his many memos on the subject, H Marshall Chadwell, the deputy head of the agency's Office of Scientific Intelligence, declared that "something was going on that must have immediate attention". He and others in the CIA were concerned that the Soviet Union was developing a secret weapon based on the "flying discs" the Nazis were rumoured to have constructed in the last months of the war. "Here's the second point I'd like to make: Project Silver Bug had almost nothing to do with a separate program of reverse-engineering of alien technology being conducted by the military in the US. Over the years the two have become intertwined with eachother and really they're apples and oranges. The key fact to remember here is that all of these designs were based upon conventional propulsion methods, nothing exotic. The VTOL designs were unique enough, but at the end of the day they were still jet powered.MILITARY RUN REVERSE ENGINEERING PROGRAMSThe "really" interesting research was happening underground in places such as Area 51, Lockheed's Skunkworks, Dryden Flight Research Center and Wright Patterson AFB. This research involved the reverse engineering of 'foreign technology' obtained by the US government from a variety of sources, including but not limited to the Roswell wreckage. From this research came electrogravitic propulsion methods along with breakthroughs in the ionization of airframes to reduce and/or eliminate drag entirely. This was the truly exotic stuff that was never declassified, and never will be. All we have is deathbed testimony from multiple people who were intimately involved in such programs. "We already have the means to travel among the stars, but these technologies are locked up in black projects, and it would take an act of God to ever get them out to benefit humanity. Anything you can imagine, we already know how to do. We now have the technology to take ET home. No, it won't take someone's lifetime to do it. There is an error in the equations. We know what it is. We now have the capability to travel to the stars. First, you have to understand that we will not get to the stars using chemical propulsion. Second, we have to devise a new propulsion technology. No one person had all of the pieces of the puzzle, if you were working within the program you only knew what you needed to know to complete your specific job."ANTI-GRAVITATIONAL RESEARCH WAS GOING ON. I DIDN`T SEE THE CRAFT, NOR DID I SEE THE BODIES, BUT I CERTAINLY KNOW SOME OF THE PEOPLE THAT DID. THERE WAS NO QUESTION THAT THERE WERE BEINGS FROM OUTSIDE THE PLANET." ~ MR. The bottomline is that as unique and ambitious as project Silver Bug was, it paled in comparison to the truly compartmentalized research project going on in the US in the decades following the cold war. Avro Canada's saucer fighters were a product of cold war fears, paranoia and was at least partially an attempt to put their company on the map with a joint US venture.The technology that currently exists within today's classified black budget programs would almost certainly blow our collective minds. Every once in awhile something slips out of the darkness and escapes into the 'white world' and it's only a matter of time before we start to see some amazing things in the skies above us.
