"Nothing grows or reproduces when the water activity falls below some pretty high value, actually," McKay said during the webcast. "Microorganisms need surprisingly wet conditions."
Equally important is the interaction between Europa's underground ocean and icy surface.
In 2013, the Hubble Space Telescope saw water vapor above the moon's south pole, which scientists suspect came from an erupting plume beneath the icy crust.
If water can escape the ocean, then it's likely that gases like carbon and oxygen can enter it. Carbon and oxygen are key elements for life in Earth's oceans, so why not in Europa's as well?
"When I think about the fluxes of oxygen to Europa's ocean, I wonder if Europa could have the kinds of vigorous biosphere that Earth has that supports larger forms of life," Vance told Business Insider. Before the post below (by AAP) I would just like to say that planets, planetoids, moons, asteroids and so on are ideal to use as space-craft and as space arks for long-term travel and settlement.
If a civilization was advanced enough, the moon's center can be hollowed out (easily by nukes) or mined, and a city/ space-station built inside it, propulsion fitted, etc.
A sufficiently large space body can absorb small impacts, and once hollowed out, it is a huge stable infrastructure, ready-built and at once ready for building hangar bays, living areas, etc.
I do not believe that humans are the most advanced species, and to assume it is absurd.

Pluto for example, orbits in the opposite direction around the Sun, and has a different angle to the other Planets.
Some have mathematically perfect orbits, unheard of in nature, such as Mars' moon Phobos (with it's obelisk), and our own familiar moon with its strange buildings and emitters.
Other space objects have changed course and speed, such as "comet" Elinin which now orbits the Sun at the same distance as Earth.

ASTRONOMERS SAY THEY have found a previously inconceivable phenomenon: planets that do not appear to be anchored to a host star but instead wander the heavens unbound.
In a two-year scan of the cosmos, 10 planets with roughly the mass of Jupiter, the largest planet of our Solar System, have been found at such enormous distances from the nearest star that some of them could be said to float freely through the Milky Way.
"Although free-floating planets have been predicted, they finally have been detected, holding major implications for planetary formation and evolution models," says Dr Mario Perez, exoplanet program scientist at NASA's headquarters in Washington DC.
The investigation, published in the science journal Nature, breaks new ground in the science of exoplanets, or planets that exist beyond our Solar System. More than 500 such planets have been identified since 1995. But these are the first that have been found to be orbiting at such a huge range from the nearest star or seem to be "unbound" from it.
Planets not shackled by gravity
The new planets were found in a search that looked for objects ranging between 10 and 500 astronomical units (AU) from a star. The AU is a standard measurement comprising the span between Earth and the Sun, nearly 150 million kilometres.
By comparison, Jupiter is just over five AU from the Sun, while Neptune, the outermost recognised planet, is 30. The theory of planetary foundation says that planets are agglomerations of dust and gas and are enslaved by their stars, doomed to orbit around it until the star runs out of fuel.
The new paper suggests these very distant planets unshackled from their gravitational moorings at an early phase. "They may have formed in proto-planetary disks, and subsequently scattered into unbound or very distant orbits," it says.
The study was written by two teams who used gravitational microlensing to analyse tens of millions of Milky Way stars over a two year period. Under this technique, a foreground star passes in front of a distant, background star. Light from the background star is magnified, carrying a telltale "light curve" that can be filtered from the foreground star.
"The implications of this discovery are profound," says German astronomer Dr Joachim Wambsganss in a commentary also published by Nature. "We have a first glimpse of a new population of planetary-mass objects in our galaxy. Now we need to explore their properties, distribution, dynamic states and history."

If not rings, these scientists say, then Chiron might have jets, or a shell of dust. That would be interesting, too.
Both Chariklo and Chiron belong to a relatively new class of objects in our solar system called centaurs. They orbit the sun beyond the orbit of the fifth planet, Jupiter. A century ago, scientists didn't know of objects in this region of space. Most asteroids, after all, orbit closer in, between the orbits of Jupiter and the fourth planet, Mars. Astronomers found the first centaur (Hidalgo) in 1920. Astronomers didn't realize there would be more objects in this part of space until they found Chiron in 1977. Now Chariklo is the largest confirmed centaur at 160 miles (260 km) in diameter. Chariklo is as big as a mid-sized main-belt asteroid.
Chiron is at least 80 miles across (130 km), maybe larger. The MIT scientists found its possible ring system from Earth, after observing an event in 2011 in which Chiron passed in front of a star, briefly blocking its light. After this "stellar occultation" by Chiron, the researchers analyzed the star's light emissions, and the momentary shadow created by Chiron, and identified optical features that suggest Chiron might possess a ring system, a circular shell of gas and dust, or symmetric jets of material shooting out from Chiron's surface.

Astronomer and study team member Amanda Bosh of MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences said in a statement:
It's interesting, because Chiron is a centaur -- part of that middle section of the solar system, between Jupiter and Pluto, where we originally weren't thinking things would be active. But it's turning out things are quite active.
Today, scientists estimate there are more than 44,000 centaurs in the solar system, concentrated mainly in a band between the orbits of Jupiter and Pluto. While most centaurs are thought to be dormant, scientists have seen glimmers of activity from Chiron. Starting in the late 1980s, astronomers observed patterns of brightening from the centaur, as well as activity similar to that of a streaking comet.
In 1993 and 1994, James Elliot, then a professor of planetary astronomy and physics at MIT, observed another occultation of a star by Chiron and in that way was able to make the first estimates of its size. At the time, Elliot also observed features that he said looked like jets of water and dust spewing from the centaur's surface.
The new MIT study observed something similar to what Elliot observed in the 1990s. They saw symmetrical, sharp features near the start and end of the "stellar occultation" - suggesting that material such as dust might be blocking a fraction of the starlight. The MIT researchers saw two such features, each about 300 kilometers from the center of the centaur. Judging from the optical data, the features are 3 and 7 kilometers wide, respectively.
Researchers say now that jets of gas and dust for Chiron, as Elliot first proposed, are still possible. They say a shell or ring of gas and dust is also possible. They say they'll have to observe more "stellar occultations" by Chiron to truly determine which interpretation - rings, shell, or jets - is the correct one. Bosh commented:
Until Chariklo's rings were found, it was commonly believed that these smaller bodies don't have ring systems. If Chiron has a ring system, it will show it's more common than previously thought.

'This was very exciting because it's our fist habitable-zone super Earth around a sun-type star,' said Nasa astronomer Natalie Batalha at the annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society this week. The announcement comes after it was revealed at the same meeting that analysis of data from Kepler had shown there are 17billion planets in the galaxy that are Earth-like in size. The possible planet is called KOI 172.02 - with the initial trio of letters standing for Kepler Object of Interest, a prefix given to all planetary candidates found by Kepler until their existence is confirmed. Dr Batalha said the find had the potential to be the closest so far to an Earth-twin beyond the solar system. It orbits a G-type star that is only slightly cooler than our own Sun, she said. 'Previously the ones we saw were orbiting other types of stars,' she was quoted as saying by SPACE.com. Analysis of Kepler's data indicates that the object takes 242 days to orbit its star, from which it is about three quarters as distant as the Earth is from the Sun. Astrophysicist Mario Livio, of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, told SPACE.com that the find was a 'big deal'. 'It's definitely a good candidate for life,' he said. Christopher Burke of the SETI Institute announced the discovery of the planet along with a batch of 461 new planet candidates spotted by Kepler since February last year. Latest findings released by NASA show that since February last year there have been 461 potential new planets discovered. These bring the total number of potential planets that have been identified by the Kepler mission to 2,740 and they orbit 2,036 stars.

'The large number of multi-candidate systems being found by Kepler implies that a substantial fraction of exoplanets reside in flat multi-planet systems," said Jack Lissauer, planetary scientist at Ames. 'This is consistent with what we know about our own planetary neighborhood.' The Kepler space telescope was launched by NASA in 2009 with the intention of finding Earth-like planets. It pinpoints potential new planets by measuring the dimming of starlight as planets pass between stars and the telescope. Not all dimming is caused by planets and it is only once dimming has been observed three times that it is formally attributed to a potential planet.

That means that any water on them has a chance of being in liquid form because the region is close enough to the star to be warm enough for ice to melt but not so close that it all evaporates. Planets orbiting close to their suns are likely to be infernos while planets in distant orbits are likely to be icy, he said. Burke also analyzed the latest Kepler data. The Kepler Space Telescope launched on March 7, 2009, and has been active for 3 years, 10 months and 1 day as of January 8, 2013. The space observatory was named in honor of the 17th-century German astronomer Johannes Kepler. Kepler is part of NASA's Discovery Program which runs relatively low-cost scientific research missions.
