Good turn in the summer of 1947 - 64 natural life ago this week - Seattle had flying disc hallucination. It was sparked that June 26 one time the P-I ran an Connected Compress story from Pendleton, Ore., suggestive of the story of pilot Kenneth Arnold seeing "nine average, saucer-like objects flying at amazing characteristic at 10,000 feet direct towards."

Arnold, a U.S. Wood Go past employee, reported seeing the discs weaving in and out of formation together with Suit Rainier and Suit Adams. If one dished, Arnold thought, the others did, too.

"It seems unachievable," he told a reporter, "but award it is."

His account generated worldwide publicity and launched the flying-saucer frenzy. Rewards were untaken for evidence. A pastor thought "flying saucers" signaled the end of the world. A man found skinned from the head claimed he was hit by a flying circumnavigate.

That summer, a group of "witnesses" in Seattle met in the midst of P-I editors to rank that they may well not all be foolish. The paper's files full up in the midst of the names of hundreds of the public reporting saucer incidents. Smith, as well reported seeing three to five discs at 7,500 feet over Ontario, Ore., the night of July 4. A substitute sheriff as well told the P-I he saw a flying disc that day on his course north from the Clark State Courthouse.

"Yesterday puzzled, hundreds of hurry together with San Diego and Seattle reported seeing the plate-like spick and span objects winging northward high in the sky at heavy supersonic speeds," the P-I's pointer piece story way in.
